Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga which stars Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Anil Kapoor among others has generated positive response from both critics and the audience. Although the trailer of the recently released film gave viewers an instant idea of the topic it dealt with, a senior actor from the cast reveals that makers kept the film’s climax a secret.
Veteran Bollywood actor and thespian Brijendra Kala plays Chaubey ji, Balbir Chaudhary’s (Anil Kapoor) office boy in the film. “A fun loving and interesting character, Chaubey is also a little prying by nature for which he thinks that there’s something cooking between Sweety (played by Sonam Kapoor) and Sahil (played by Rajkummar Rao),” explains Brijendra Kala.
Being the first mainstream film on lesbian relationship in Bollywood, and collecting Rs 26.01 crore globally, the actors of Ek Ladki Ko… had no clue about it’s ending when the shoot began.
Brijendra Kala says, “Actually, we did not know during the shooting that the film was based on lesbian relationship. We did not know the climax of the story, the makers had kept it secret and it was only when the trailer was out that we all got the hint of what the actual story is about. Towards the end of the shoot I realised that perhaps the story had something to do with the LGBTQ community.”
Kala had been known for his brilliantly portrayed supporting characters in several films like — PK, Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan, Zero, Paan Singh Tomar, and Jab We Met to name a few — throughout his career where he’s mainly seen in comic roles. When asked about his take on the same, the actor said, “Mera humesha se manna hai ki maine comedy nahi ki. Neither have I done any comedy characters. I act seriously, but it becomes comedy! I have done that in most films,” laughs the actor.
“When I read a script, I always check whether the character is interesting or not. I am fond of writing as well, so I always worked on my characters I play in all the films, and try to better them. If I act just the way it is written, then there would be nothing exciting about it. I speak to the directors and they support me to enhance the character on the spot,” he explains.
Talking about his favourite co-actors Kala discloses that he is at his best when doing projects with Vinay Pathak. “I have done 16 films with Vinay Pathak; needless to say I feel most comfortable with him. Apart from that, when it comes to superstars, I have worked with Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Rishi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor, and I loved the experience every time.
“They are all hard working and have their own way of working. Both Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir are very hard working. Shah Rukh himself says, ‘Sir agar aapko saath mein rehearsal karna hai to mujhe batana.’ Salman, on the other hand, has a slightly different style. I have worked with him in Bharat recently, after Tubelight,” says Kala who was a thespian for 19 years before starting his career in Bollywood.
